I made a tamper from nuts and bolts I found around the house and a spare pot lid I had. Pretty happy with it other that the weight. The lid is hollow unfortunately, I'm contemplating filling that coffee for a little more weight.

    Could fill it with sand.

Love the design and the ingenuity.

does it actually fit your basket well? is it actually perfectly flat?

  3. pacifica333

IDK, a well fitting and comfortable to use tamper was one of the better investments in workflow, IMO.

Doesn’t that rounded edge on the bottom mean you don’t actually get a flat surface to the puck?

Just buy one second hand off Craigslist/ marketplace man

decent tampers are like $20 but if you wanna die on this hill i won’t stop you

    I think you misspelled:

“being obnoxiously cheap so as to refuse to drop $20 on a tool as part of an expensive hobby. Such that I seek attention”

    I respect it tho

  7. Mofos will spend 500 dollars on an espresso machine but not get a 20 dollar tamper to seem trendy lol.

Dawg they aren’t expensive and the Normcore Spring Tamper feels so satisfying to use

This sub is literally more jerk than the jerk sub.

  10. I mean a good tamper isn’t that expensive. You do you though. Just doesn’t look very ergonomic.

Is post this meant for r/espressocirclejerk?

If you have the supplies and know how to make a tamper, go for it.

Looks straight out of Star Wars 😅

You do you… my self leveling normcore was easily the best investment I made for my workflow

The question is , how effective is it ? Does it tamp the whole bed & flat ? Is bed curved inwards at the sides ? Is it exactly the correct size ?

Great that you’ve created this but I’m not entirely sure it’s going to work anywhere near as good as a real tamper

Steampunk tamper. Stick ’em up on Etsy for $300.

Hey man, enjoy your coffee and your tamper in peace, ignore this echo chamber.

Can we ask the OP what his espresso machine is? If it costs more than $500 he is just being too cheap! If it costs less than $100 you are doing just fine!

    What a knob!

    …sorry, I couldn’t help myself🤦

Out of curiosity, what beans do you use?
If you can’t justify a $5 tamper, I’m wondering if you buy $8 bags of beans.

Far prettier and less disturbing than the DIY WDT tools I see around here for sure

    Welp, if it works…

  23. Cheap tampers from AliExpress are under $10 and do the job just fine

  24. Ill-Actuator-8904

Honestly, without thinking about ergonomics, that tamper looks pretty cool. If you like it keep it. Half of my accessory decisions are vain lol

  26. And your car still runs? Shhh… don’t tell your wifu.

I’m confused why everyone so personally offended you didn’t spend $20. My guy used his free will to make something unique and cool and we’re mad?? Where’s our whimsy and creativity?? I wish more people were crafty and reused things other than IMMEDIATELY resorting to spending money and getting mad you didn’t join them. On the other hand I agree the edges won’t be tamped though. You should spend $20 on a tamper and drill a hole into it to attach this tower of bolts and nuts.

If you are this cheap espresso is not for you
